From Foster to Famous: Tom Monaghan

Former foster kid Tom Monaghan is the mastermind behind one of the most recognizable household names: Domino’s Pizza.

Born in 1937, Monaghan spent several years in a Catholic orphanage after the death of his father.

Though he was ultimately reunited with his mother, his formative years were strongly influenced by the Catholic lessons he was taught while at St. Joseph Home for Children in Jackson, Michigan.

After high school, Monaghan joined the Marine Corps before returning to his hometown. Once he was stateside, he enrolled in college and delivered pizzas to help cover rent.

The rest, as they say, is history.

In 1984 Monaghan sold the majority of his share in Domino’s in 1984 for $2 billion, and began focusing much of his energy into Catholic charities and higher education facilities.
