Job Corps Celebrating 60 Years and its People
As Job Corps nears its 60th Anniversary, we are celebrating an important milestone at David L. Carrasco Job Corps. Alfredo “Freddy” Lopez reached 40 years of service at the campus, dedicating his life to serving the students. Freddy is the Food Storage Room Attendant and Lead Cook. His supervisor says Freddy is incredible at helping out wherever is needed, making sure the cafeteria never runs out of supplies—and he’s good with the students.
For 64-year-old Freddy, the time has passed quickly because he loves his job, and especially seeing all the students at lunchtime. It’s important to him that they have a comfortable environment and a good meal to enjoy.
“Every day I see the kids. They are my motivation. I like to say hello to them and ask them how they are. You see the energy they have and it’s contagious.”
Freddy started as a dishwasher, went to classes in food service, and worked his way up. He’s done every job available in the cafeteria except supervise—that’s because he’s happy to be where he’s at and forever grateful for the opportunity that Job Corps gave him.
“I do appreciate what Job Corps has done for me. Job Corps is like a family for me. I come from a small family, and I have a lot of friends at Job Corps. Job Corps is going to be 60 years old. Hopefully, they get another 60 years.”
