Vern Buchanan: Common Sense Bills to Fight Heroin Epidemic
Florida Representative Vern Buchanan writes an op-ed piece for the Tampa Bay Times on the increase of heroin use in the state and its effect on families, particularly children. He recalls how the US House of Representatives heard testimony from Eckerd Kids. Eckerd Kids is a Florida-based nonprofit that uses data to predict when kids in the child welfare system are vulnerable and takes parental substance abuse into account when identifying at-risk children. This allows caseworkers to immediately respond to emerging threats, before a child is harmed by a parent.
