When Kelsey moved to Brevard County to be closer to family, she never imagined she would have to rebuild nearly every part of her life.
After leaving an unsafe relationship and facing challenges with addiction, she found herself starting over and separated from her young daughter. While living at Glass House, a local sober-living program, she learned about Eckerd Connects and voluntarily enrolled in its Parenting Education Program.
Although she was not immediately receptive to the classes, the lessons began to resonate.
“At night, I would think about what was said and how I could make a better life with my daughter,” Kelsey shared.
Having experienced abuse during her own childhood, Kelsey was determined to create something different for her daughter.
“Eckerd taught me how to be a kind and active mother, and I will always be grateful for that.”
After completing the parenting program, Family Support Specialist Omaira continued checking in with Kelsey and eventually connected her with Eckerd Connects’ housing program. With additional support, Kelsey was able to move into an apartment and continue building a stable life.
Today, after approximately 15 months apart, she has regained custody of her daughter, maintained her sobriety, and secured a job that allows her to support her family independently.
“I’m proud of myself for doing the work,” she said.
Omaira believes one quote perfectly captures the perseverance she has witnessed throughout Kelsey’s journey: “Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.”
“This quote defines her,” Omaira shared. “Kind heart. Fierce mind. Brave spirit!”
Looking ahead, Kelsey hopes to continue building a better life for her daughter. Her advice to anyone facing circumstances similar to those she once faced is simple:
“Stay the course and keep praying. There were so many times I felt like there was no way things could get better.”
Her journey is a reminder that with perseverance, support, and the opportunity for a fresh start, a new chapter is possible.
