The beginning of a new school year brings new possibilities—but for some students and families, it can also bring very practical challenges.
A backpack. School supplies. A required uniform. The everyday items students need to walk into a classroom prepared may seem simple, but when families are navigating other challenges, those expenses can become another barrier to educational stability.
As the 2026 school year began, Eckerd Connects’ Aftercare Resource Navigator Program (ARNP) helped students and families across Miami-Dade and Broward counties access the resources they needed for a strong start.
Through individualized support, advocacy and resource coordination, Aftercare Navigators connected young people with backpacks, school supplies, uniforms and other essential educational items. Students supported included Dalvin B., Isaiah T., Aiden B., Denario J. and Nevaeh G. in Miami-Dade County, as well as Tony C. Jr., Lawdjison C., Cayden M.-B. and Jamyiah P. in Broward County.
The students are continuing their education at different stages and on different pathways. Dalvin B. is entering 11th grade at Homestead High School, while Aiden B. and Denario J. attend Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College. Nevaeh G. attends Miami Dade College.

Their experiences illustrate an important part of ARNP’s work: meeting young people where they are and helping them stay connected to the supports they need as they move forward.
For some, that means helping address an immediate need before the first day of school. For others, it may mean connecting them with educational, workforce or community resources as they transition into adulthood. In each case, the goal is to reduce barriers that could interrupt progress and strengthen the pathway toward greater stability and opportunity.
Education is an important part of that pathway. Having the tools to participate fully in school can support attendance, confidence and engagement while helping young people remain focused on longer-term academic and career goals.
ARNP Aftercare Navigators work alongside youth and families to identify needs, connect them with community resources and provide continued support during important transitions. That individualized approach recognizes that progress does not look exactly the same for every young person—and that sometimes relatively small supports can make a meaningful difference.
By connecting families with resources at the right time, Eckerd Connects is helping young people build stronger foundations for what comes next—whether that is completing high school, pursuing technical training, continuing to college or preparing for the workforce.
For these students, the start of the school year represents more than new backpacks and supplies. It is another step forward, supported by people and community connections working together to help ensure practical barriers do not stand in the way of opportunity.
