What is Eckerd's Opportunity Youth Program?

The Opportunity Youth Program (OYP) engages, empowers, and energizes young adults ages 16–24 who are out of school and unemployed in Rapides and Vernon parishes in Louisiana. Our goal is simple: remove barriers and open doors to education, training, and meaningful careers.

Through community partnerships and a caring support team, OYP connects young people to resources that help them earn diplomas, gain hands-on experience, and build skills for long-term success. Along the way, students also take part in events like town halls, game nights, service projects, and career fairs—because opportunity often begins with connection.

What Makes It Unique?

The OYP goes beyond traditional training by focusing on the whole person. We combine education, job skills, and career readiness with mentoring, counseling, and real-world opportunities. Whether through a community service project or a resume workshop, every step is designed to help participants grow in confidence, leadership, and independence.

Strong partnerships with local organizations and employers ensure that young people not only learn—but also find pathways into work, college, and brighter futures.

Why It Matters?

Opportunity Youth are talented, motivated, and ready to thrive—sometimes they just need the right support system. The Eckerd Connects’ OYP creates that support, turning “What’s next?” into “I did it!” for hundreds of young people in Central Louisiana.

Funded in part by a Reconnecting CenLA Program Grant from The Rapides Foundation (established 2023).
