Tampa-based non-profit organization onbikes is partnering with Eckerd Community Alternatives to donate 500 new bicycles and helmets to children in foster care in the Tampa Bay area. The mission of onbikes is to restore the self-confidence, health and overall well-being of at-risk children in the community by providing these children with bicycles. onbikes presents an annual Winter Wonder Ride, now in its fourth year, in Tampa to raise money to purchase the bicycles and helmets.
The 4th Annual Winter Wonder Ride takes place December 13, 2014 from 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm and includes a scenic bike ride starting at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, through the heart of downtown, along the waters of Bayshore and back again. The ride is followed by a festive celebration featuring food from local vendors and entertainment. To register, or for more information, visit www.onbikes.org.
Volunteers from onbikes will gather at a marathon 24-hour Bike Build event on December 5 to assemble the bikes and get them ready to be distributed to the children before Christmas. The media is invited to cover the event and talk with Eckerd and onbikes about the partnership and what it means for Tampa Bay area foster youth. The bicycles will be distributed at a series of events in December. In Pasco County, the bicycle distribution event is hosted by the Shops at Wiregrass and will take place on December 20. About onbikes: onbikes is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 when a group of friends organized a community bike ride during the winter holiday season to raise funds so at-risk kids could receive their very first bike. The mission of onbikes is to restore the self-confidence, health and overall well-being of at-risk children in the community by providing these children with bicycles. They strive to make onbikes a lifestyle, not just an organization. It is their hope that each life they touch picks up their “giving is better than receiving” philosophy, and they are committed to serving the community around them. onbikes will positively impact the children, families, and communities in which they live.
