From Foster to Famous: Ice-T

Tracy Lauren Marrow, better known as Ice-T, has been a popular performer for decades.

Currently staring on “Law and Order: SVU” as Detective Fin Tutuola, Marrow, 59, lost both of his parents at an early age.

Following his father’s fatal heart attack, the 12-year-old Marrow was fostered by a nearby aunt briefly, then was sent to live with another aunt and her husband in in South Los Angeles.

“My father’s family came from Virginia and Philadelphia,” Ice-T is quoted as saying. “He wasn’t a brother who talked a lot. He was a workingman, a quiet, blue-collar dude”

Marrow didn’t follow in his father’s footsteps. His teen years were sprinkled with gang involvement, violence and criminal activity. Following the birth of his first child, he joined the Army – but went AWOL following a four-year tour of duty. He ultimately received an honorable discharge, and focused his efforts on pursuing a music career.
