Comedian Eddie Murphy can make almost anyone laugh.
Sadly though, much of the celebrated actor’s childhood was not comical.
His father, a transit police officer in Brooklyn, New York, was murdered when Murphy was 8 years old. A year later, his mother, a telephone operator, became very ill. Murphy and his brother were placed into foster care while she recovered.
Thankfully the family was reunited, but Murphy has told several media outlets the experience instilled in him the importance of laughter.
“I’ve always had confidence,” he said in a Rolling Stones interview 2011. “It came because I have lots of initiative. I wanted to make something of myself.”
