From Foster to Famous: Alonzo Mourning

As a young teen, NBA star Alonzo Mourning, 47, was reportedly heartbroken over his parent’s divorce. Refusing to pick a side, he rebelled.

“It got to the point where my parents sought some professional help for all of us,” Mourning said in an interview with CBN. “One day as we sat in a counseling session, I came to understand that even though I loved my mom and my dad, I needed to find a new living situation, whatever that might be.”

He was fostered by the Threets, a couple in their 50s who specialized in providing a home for troubled teens.

“Once I walked in,” he told CBN, “I never wanted to walk out. And I didn’t. That’s where I lived until I went off to college.”

Mourning went on to attend Georgetown, and later play for the Miami Heat.

In 1997, Mourning established Alonzo Mourning Charities Inc. to aid in the development of children and families living in at-risk situations and provides support and services that enhance the lives of youth of promise
