Across the country, young adults are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis—one that directly impacts education, career readiness, and long-term workforce success.
According to national research, nearly half of young adults ages 18–25 report experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, while millions of youth ages 16–24 struggle with trauma, social isolation, housing instability, or chronic stress. At the same time, employers increasingly report that emotional resilience, communication, adaptability, and interpersonal connection are essential workplace skills. When mental health challenges go unaddressed, they can affect a young person’s ability to stay engaged in training, build healthy relationships, maintain employment, and confidently navigate the workplace.
Many Job Corps students arrive carrying the weight of difficult life experiences—trauma, exposure to violence, unstable home environments, and ongoing socio-economic hardship. These circumstances can create significant barriers to learning, personal development, and long-term success. Yet with the right support systems in place, these same students often demonstrate incredible resilience, growth, and transformation.

At Job Corps, mental health services are a core part of supporting student success. Our dedicated counselors provide compassionate, student-centered care focused on emotional wellness, crisis intervention, coping strategies, and personal growth. Through these services, students gain tools that not only support their well-being, but also strengthen their ability to succeed in career training, connect with peers and mentors, and prepare for long-term employment.
These efforts are making a meaningful difference.
However, the need for support continues to grow.
Currently, access to mental health care is limited by staffing capacity, available program hours, and the increasing complexity of student needs. While foundational services remain critically important, many students would benefit from expanded resources such as:
- Increased counseling availability and reduced wait times
- Group therapy and peer support opportunities
- Trauma-informed care initiatives
- Life skills and resilience-building workshops
- On-site crisis intervention resources
- Expanded partnerships with local mental health providers and community organizations
As the only non-profit organization operating Job Corps campuses, Eckerd Connects understands that workforce development and mental wellness go hand in hand. Preparing young adults for careers means supporting the whole person—helping students build confidence, develop healthy coping skills, strengthen communication, and create the stability needed to thrive both personally and professionally.
This is where community partnership becomes especially important.
By strengthening relationships with local mental health providers, healthcare organizations, workforce partners, educators, and community leaders, we can continue building a stronger network of support around the young adults we serve. Together, we have an opportunity to ensure students not only complete their training programs, but also gain the resilience, confidence, and emotional well-being necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.
When we invest in mental health support, we invest in futures.
Every additional counseling session, every supportive partnership, and every expanded resource represents a young person who feels seen, supported, and empowered to move forward. Through collaboration and shared commitment, we can continue creating pathways toward brighter, healthier, and more stable futures for the next generation of America’s workforce.
